I'm a 56 year old Type 1 diabetic since 1952.
I had been getting Laser treatments for Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy
in both eyes for about 10 years.
A nutritionist told me of studies that had shown that Benfotiamine (Fat
soluble thiamine (I think that's vit B1))
could be helpful.
about 18 mo's ago my Doctor told me emphatically that I would very soon
(no
longer than 3 months) need to surgery
in hospital to remove stuff from my eyes.
about a month after that I started taking Benfotiamine 200 mg 3 times a
day
with meals/snacks .
At my next appt 3 mo's later my doctor said "Let's hold off on the
surgery,
we'll re*****s in 3 mo's".
At my next appt 3 mo's later my doctor made no mention of any need for
surgery.
At my next appt 3 mo's later I specifically asked my doctor how I was
doing.
He said "You're doing very well".
shortly after this I did more of my own research on the benefits of
Benfotiamine and concluded
that apparently my dosages were very conservative.
I gradually (over about 6 weeks) increased my dosage to 600 mg 3 times a
day.
my last visit about 2 weeks ago my doctor said "You've stabilized, you may
only need to have laser
once in a while for maintenance"
I had previously required laser in one or both eyes every 3 to 6 months
for
about 10 years.
By the way, my Ophthalmologist is Dr Ben Zane Cohen of New Rochelle, NY
USA
I don't want to recommend any particular brand of Benfotiamine since the
pharmaceutical company ****lls
will jump on this post like flies on Sh*t claiming I'm posting this for
reasons of economic benifit.
Regarding appropriate dosages for children I don't have a clue.
Whether the dosages I'm personally are exactly right, I really don't know.
