After more than two years of legal wrangling,
California is free to spend over $3 billion during
the next decade on stem cell research - the
largest sum any body has proposed to spend
on stem cells.
In November 2004, voters backed the creation
of the California Institute for Regenerative
Medicine (CIRM) with the goal of boosting
research using human embryonic stem cells.
This is currently hampered by restrictions on
federal funding.
