RID has Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus unambiguously defined as
"brothers", whatever that means for robots. But, RID is special...
Dreamwave made them brothers in their G1 series.
Was there anything in any of the other G1 universes that identified
the two as brothers? (And, if Optimus gave the Matrix to his brother
when he died, wasn't that just nepotism?)
And then there's Nemesis Prime. In the Classics G1 Universe, we have
Optimus Prime, Ultra Magnus, and Nemesis Prime, all sharing the same
body design, which was only indicative of some form of familial
relation****p in Dreamwave G1, but might have meaning elsewhere. Might
Nemesis not be the brother who went bad (with a bit of prompting by
Straxus)?
Where there ever any identified Transformers "brothers" who ended up
on opposite sides of the war, for one reason or another?
I don't like the idea of Transformers having siblings all that much.
It just doesn't make sense for robots, despite the best efforts of the
G2 comic to make parent-child relation****ps. And, it's something that
seems to happen in nearly every continuity -- if Sideswipe and
Sunstreaker exist, they are somehow brothers.
I think "brother" might be a mistranslation from the Cybertronian,
picking the word that best matches the relation****p without actually
literally meaning brother.
Ultimately, family in human life is the people who you don't choose,
and yet who you are tied to by bonds of responsibility and usually
love. You might not actually like them, but you have a responsibility
for them, and you will be socially shunned if you don't live up to
your responsibilities. Are you your brother's keeper? Well, to a
limited extent, yes.
I find it much more plausible that Sideswipe and Sunstreaker might
have that type of relation****p programmed in, than that they shared
the same parent(s). The only question would by why? There are plenty
of advantages to such relation****ps in human society, but I'm not sure
there are direct parallels in Transformers society.
In the IDWverse, Sideswipe wants to drop everything to find his
missing brother. Certainly that level of personal loyalty can have its
advantages (especially if you're Sunstreaker in this case), but then
the question is why is it so rare? And how did it happen?
Anyway, enough rambling.
Gustavo!
