Free Travel Information from a Franco-American Family

Suggestions for a cool vacation in France:

We rented via AutoEscape (Europcar) a Hyundai Getz Diesel. For more
information go to http://www.autoescape.com
. You can average about 700
km for 42 Euros per tank (in 2005). If you travel by group of 3 or 4 a
small Diesel is fine. It will be less expensive than 3 or 4 train
tickets. In the same category you can rent a Peugeot 206 or Renault
Clio. The rental company will let you know what they have.

Do not forget to count in your budget the Toll (P=E9age) if you are
going to do a lot of motorway driving. Some motorways are more
expensive than others... see the Association des soci=E9t=E9s des
autoroutes fran=E7aises (ASFA) for more information
http://www.autoroutes.fr

We mainly used Formule1 hotel (average 36 Euros for 3 persons with
breakfast) . Formule1 hotels are located mainly in the outer city
limits (Zone d'Activit=E9s), very rarely downtown. see
http://www.hotelformule1.com
for more information.
Hotel Etap (average 42 Euros for 3 persons with breakfeast). See
http://www.etaphotel.com
for more information. You can also try Hotel
Premier, B&B, Ibis and so on... Your rental car will allow you to go to
the hotel of your choice.

You can easily rent an hotel room from one hotel to the other as you
go... The hotel manager will help you. No need to rent in advance
unless you are in the peak season.

To buy food and gaz the best prices are E. Leclerc
http://www.e-leclerc.com
. Your rental car will allow you to go to the
centre commercial of your choice and save on your grocery budget.

Attention! American Credit Cards are often not accepted by European Gas
Station Smart Pumps. You need to have cash during weekends to pay for
gas.

In most cities parking is free "entre 12 h et 14 h" but most stores
are closed during that time. You can plan your trip accordingly.

To call from a phone booth you cannot use coins. You need a Telephone
Card that you can purchase in any Tabac. Be sure to not buy a card for
a cellular phone; ask the teller at the Tabac.

In 45 days we did the following list of scenic drives:

Paris - Le Sacr=E9-Coeur =E0 Montmartre - Notre Dame de Paris - La Tour
Eiffel
Givernie (Claude Monet's village)
Ch=E2teau Gaillard (Richard the Lionhearted)
Etretat - Haute-Normandie (Romance)
World Peace Statue (Commemoration of the Normandy Landings)
Mont Saint Michel - Bretagne
Ch=E2teau d'Uss=E9 (Charles Perrault Sleeping Beauty's castle)
Ch=E2teau de Chennonceau
Chateau d'Alzay-le-Rideau
Notre Dame De Chartres
Lorraine American Cemetery
Auvergne
Pompignan near Montauban

Rocamadour Dordogne
Walled City of Carcassonne
Aix-en-Provence Music festival (F=EAte de la musique)
Aqueduc de Roquefavour
Saint Cyr Les Lecques
Ch=E2teau de Vauvenargues (purchased by the famous painter Pablo
Picasso) Provence
Gorges du Verdon

That's about it, we had a great time and if you go to France we wish
you the best time possible... if you rent a car drive safely and watch
your speed, they have radars all over the place... Check your speed:
for more information about French police speed radar go to
http://www.radars-auto.com

Bonne route et/ou bon voyage !

I posted this information in The Huntsville French Language Meetup
Group (French Speakers near Huntsville Alabama) in August 2005.
