Healthy Difference On 'Today's THV at 5': Red Dye and ADHD Link, Allergies

and Dogs

Your child's hyperactivity might not be their fault nor be blamed on ADHD.

When kids get out of control, the cause could be something you did, the
food
you gave them. One of the biggest culprits could be foods with red dyes.

A recent study found a link between certain additives and increased
hyperactivity in kids.

This included food coloring and a preservative called sodium benzoate, an
ingredient in many fruit juices, soft drinks and other processed foods.

Right now, there is some burgeoning evidence that is just looking at food
colors.

Doctors say parents can look at their kids and figure out what might be a
problem.

Food preservatives, chocolate, oranges, sugar, wheat and milk have also
been
shown to cause hyperactivity in some kids, along with allergic reactions.

If you want to help prevent your child from developing allergies, German
researchers say get a dog.

A six year study of 9,000 kids showed that having a pet can train your
immune system to be less sensitive to triggers that can cause allergies,
asthma, eczema and hay fever
