Sub-urb?  San Jose is 45 miles south, has 200,000+ more people and is
about 175 square miles, compared to San Francisco's 46.  Not exactly a
suburb.
Asking about the San Jose bay area works. It's just like asking about
the South Bay area , North Bay area etc. etc.
