Haha! We've never had that problem from ILs exactly - helps to live
far away, but DD's cousins give her tons of their toys if she takes
even a tiny liking to it. WE've had to say "stop." Actually we say
"Maybe you can keep it here for her so next time she comes to visit,
she'll have it to play with."
Maybe some variation on that is what you can say to your MIL?
Probably your DD played with it, and MIL decided she can keep it.
