On Amazon, the 2002 World Book encyclopedia (20 volumes) goes for
about $240 used, excluding ****pping. On Craigslist, in the Boston
area, sets of encylopedias, of earlier vintages, are going for $100 or
less.
A new 2008 edition of World Book costs $1089. I would consider this a
reasonable investment if the volumes are actually opened by my kids.
I'll try to interest my 5yo son in the one-volume encyclopedia he
already has ... .
