I'd have probably done what you did, because I do tend to take a 'it
takes a village approach' and if there's no parent around responding,
I do what I have to do. At the same time, I could kind of see how the
other parent would be a bit miffed - well, I can appreciate not
wanting your kid to get upset. That said, if she ignored the situation
until after the fact, she should have kept quiet. Tough situation
though.
