I think this is a situation where the mom was not appropriately
watching her child.  The child was young enough that the mom should
have been within arms reach.  Maybe she designated the 10 yo to watch
her.

I don't think there was anything wrong in how you handled it  - 
The only thing you could possibly have done was to ask the 10 yo to
get her mother maybe.  

Sounds like the mom is operating in the 'attack is the best defense'
mode.  She wasn't watching her kid, so she blames that on you.
